Youth Triumphs Over Experience in Chaotic Cheese-Rolling Showdown

The annual cheese-rolling event at Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire lived up to its reputation for controlled chaos, as a 24-year-old German YouTuber defeated the 23-time champion in a race that had been brewing for months. Tom Kopke, who posts videos under the name Tooleko, bested local hero Chris Anderson, 38, in front of a crowd that included reporters from the BBC and spectators from around the world. "If that hill is hell, I'm the devil," Kopke said after his victory, which marked his third win in three years. Anderson, who came out of retirement specifically to face the challenge, led early but lost ground when Kopke shot past him. "I thought, 'I'm going to get his ass,'" Kopke recalled. His preparation? "Shut off your brain and go for it."

The event, which has roots that may stretch back 600 years, has grown from a local tradition into a global spectacle. Competitors now travel from across the world, and influencers like Kopke draw millions of views by hurling themselves down the steep 1:2 gradient. Anderson, a ground worker who grew up in the nearby village of Brockworth, offered a different philosophy: "It's better to stay in control rather than going flat out." His son William, 11, kept the family tradition alive by winning a children's uphill race.

Other winners included Niels Wennemars, 21, from the Netherlands, whose father and brother are world champion speed skaters. Alix Heugas, 27, from France's Basque region, won the women's downhill with no training. "I had no technique, just wing it," she said. Otto Linkogle, 19, from Florida, won the final race. Despite the Tewkesbury safety advisory group declaring the event "unsafe," council officials said they have no desire to stop it. The cheeses, kept in a fridge until race time, survived the high temperatures and remained edible.
