Your Guide to the Outer Banks: Where to Stay This Summer

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is more than a destination; it's a feeling. This slender chain of barrier islands, stretching roughly 100 miles from Corolla down to the ferry-accessed Ocracoke, holds a particular magic. It’s in the salt-tinged air, the wide, sandy beaches, and the rhythm of the waves. Having lived here since 2018, I’ve seen how these islands captivate families year after year, drawn by their remote charm and stunning natural beauty.

Finding the right place to stay is the first step to your own OBX story. The options are wonderfully varied. You might seek a spacious beach house where the whole clan can gather, or a snug retreat perfect for a couple. The good news is, there’s a rental for every taste and budget.

We’ve selected standout properties by examining host reputation, guest reviews, amenities, and location. Consider a five-bedroom home in Southern Shores for a family reunion, or a luxury cottage in Kitty Hawk for a romantic escape. For something unique, a tiny house in Ocracoke offers boho-glam isolation, while a midcentury-modern gem in Kill Devil Hills puts outdoorsy types right in the action.

Each town has its own character. Duck is walkable and charmingly local, while the central towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head buzz with attractions and easy beach access. Hatteras Island is a surfer’s paradise, and Corolla’s wild northern beaches are dotted with grand vacation homes. Don’t overlook Manteo on Roanoke Island for its historic, walkable downtown.

While summer is the peak season, October offers a quieter visit with warm weather and great surf. Rental prices are generally reasonable for a coastal escape, starting around $100 a night. For the most serene stretches of sand, look to the residentially-focused shores of Southern Shores and Duck.
