Your Face Is Your Ticket: TSA's Touchless ID Expands to 40 Airports

The future of airport security is looking you in the eye. The Transportation Security Administration has significantly expanded its Touchless ID program, bringing facial recognition checkpoints to 40 U.S. airports as of this month. Major hubs like Miami, Boston, and San Jose are among the latest to install the special lanes.

For enrolled travelers, the process is straightforward. At a designated lane, you step up, glance at a camera, and—if the scan matches your stored passport photo—you’re cleared to proceed to screening. The TSA says verification takes about ten seconds, eliminating the need to hand over a physical ID or boarding pass.

Access is currently limited. You must be a TSA PreCheck member, fly with American, Alaska, Delta, Southwest, or United, and have a valid passport linked to your airline frequent flier account. Opting in through your airline profile adds a ‘Touchless ID’ marker to your mobile boarding pass. The agency stresses the program is voluntary; those who prefer can use standard PreCheck lanes.

This spring, the TSA aims to have the technology at 65 airports nationwide. The next 25 locations slated for installation include Phoenix, San Diego, Austin, and Tampa. While the agency advises travelers to still carry a physical ID as a backup, it states that facial images are deleted within 24 hours of a flight’s departure and are not used for surveillance or shared with other entities.
