Young Hacker's One-Cent Hotel Spree Ends in Madrid Arrest

Spanish police have apprehended a 20-year-old man accused of a brazen digital fraud, booking luxury hotel rooms worth thousands of euros for a single cent. The arrest occurred at a high-end Madrid hotel where the suspect was staying, capping a swift four-day investigation.

Authorities say the man targeted a travel booking website, manipulating its payment validation system through a cyber attack. This allowed him to confirm reservations—some priced at €1,000 per night—while the system only processed a payment of one euro cent. The scheme reportedly caused over €20,000 in losses to the hotels.

The fraud was uncovered not by the booking platform, but later when the payment processor transferred the minuscule actual sum to the hotel group. Police moved quickly, locating and detaining the suspect at the Madrid property. His most recent stay was a four-night visit that would normally cost €4,000; he also allegedly consumed mini-bar items and left additional charges unpaid.

While the police statement indicates bookings at other hotels may be involved, specific details were not released. According to reports from Spanish outlet ABC, the suspect did not attempt to hide, using his real identity for the reservations. He also has a prior arrest record in the Canary Islands for a similar incident involving a luxury hotel stay.
