World Cup Travelers Beware: US Warns of Soaring Hotel and Flight Scams

RIA NovostiSaturday, June 20, 2026

As the World Cup approaches, the US Federal Trade Commission is warning travelers to be vigilant when searching for hotels and flights online. Scammers are creating fake websites that mimic official hotel and airline sites, as well as counterfeit FIFA World Cup 2026 websites, in an attempt to swindle unsuspecting travelers out of their money. These fake sites often ask for unconventional payment methods, such as wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards, which are virtually impossible to recover once the money has been sent. The FTC is urging travelers to be cautious when booking their trips, as scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics. In 2024, Americans lost a record $12.5 billion to scams, with $15.9 billion lost in the previous year. The FTC advises travelers to research companies thoroughly, never pay with unconventional methods, and always verify the authenticity of websites before making a booking. By being aware of these potential scams, travelers can protect themselves and ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to the World Cup.
