Winter's Grip Tightens: Millions Face Cold and Darkness as Cross-Country Storm Rages

A sprawling winter storm maintained its assault on the continental United States Sunday, leaving a trail of ice, snow, and bitter cold from the Gulf Coast to New England. The system has paralyzed travel, cut power to hundreds of thousands, and pushed thermometers to dangerous lows.

Utility crews worked through the night, but over 800,000 customers remained without electricity by mid-morning, with the hardest hits in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. State officials urged residents to prepare for prolonged outages as ice-laden trees continue to threaten power lines.

Road conditions are dire. State police from Texas to Maine report hundreds of accidents, and major interstates have been closed in sections due to whiteout conditions and thick ice. The National Weather Service has extended wind chill warnings for much of the Midwest, where temperatures feel like 30 below zero.

The timing is particularly challenging, coming just weeks into the new administration. While federal emergency resources have been mobilized, the scale of the storm is testing response coordination across multiple states. For many, the immediate concern is more basic: staying warm and safe until the system finally moves out, which forecasters say may not be until late Monday.
