Why Russian Tourists Keep Getting Into Accidents in Antalya
Turkish authorities have identified the main reasons behind a recent spike in traffic accidents involving Russian tourists on the Antalya coast. According to a spokesperson for the Antalya municipality, the primary causes are unfamiliarity with local traffic laws, distracted driving, and mistakes made while operating rental vehicles.
The issue came into sharp focus on May 23, when a tour bus crashed in the Beldibi district of Antalya province, injuring 14 Russian tourists. Two of them required surgery, while the rest were treated and released back to their hotels. It was one of several incidents involving Russian visitors in late May.
“Most of these accidents aren’t caused by poor road conditions,” the municipal representative told reporters. “They happen because drivers break traffic rules or don’t understand local driving customs.”
A large share of the crashes involve tourists who rent cars, motorcycles, or quad bikes. Many underestimate how heavy traffic gets in resort areas, misjudge the local road layout, or ignore specific Turkish traffic regulations.
With summer crowds pouring in, Antalya’s roads are under serious pressure. Local officials have been running safety campaigns aimed at foreign visitors, but they say the message isn’t getting through. The spokesperson urged tourists to read up on local driving rules before renting any vehicle. “Watch your speed and always wear protective gear,” he added. “That alone would prevent a lot of trouble.”
