Why Indonesian Travelers Are Falling in Love with Russia

A growing number of Indonesian tourists are setting their sights on Russia, driven by a simple, powerful dream: to see snow and the northern lights for the first time. Ikhsanuddin, a tourism entrepreneur from Indonesia, told RIA Novosti that his company has already arranged trips for more than 2,000 Indonesian visitors, and demand keeps climbing each year.

For people living in a tropical archipelago, the chance to experience a real winter is a major draw. “What impresses them most is the snow, especially those who have never seen winter before,” Ikhsanuddin explained. Beyond the weather, visitors are captivated by Russian architecture, historic landmarks, museums, and art.

Moscow and St. Petersburg remain the top destinations, thanks to their cultural riches and iconic sights. But a new favorite is emerging: Murmansk. This Arctic city has become a dream destination for Indonesians hoping to witness the aurora borealis. “For many, a trip to Murmansk to see the northern lights becomes one of the most unforgettable experiences of their lives,” he added.

With interest only growing, Russia is clearly offering Indonesian travelers something they can’t find at home—and they’re eager to come see it for themselves.
