Why Azerbaijan is emerging as a top summer escape for Russian travelers

Azerbaijan is shaping up to be a surprisingly strong contender for Russian tourists this summer, offering not just bold flavors but an emotional punch that goes beyond the usual beach holiday. Sergey Golov, president of the Union of Travel Agencies and a member of the Public Chamber’s coordination council, shared the country’s growing appeal in a recent interview with NSM.
According to Golov, the former Soviet republic is currently buzzing with visitors, thanks to a rapid push to build new hotels, upgrade roads, and expand tourist services. “I was in Azerbaijan just a month ago,” he said. “You wouldn’t believe how many tourists are there right now.” The country, he noted, is actively reinventing itself as a destination, blending Soviet-era charm with modern comforts.
The news comes as Russian travelers are spending more on international summer trips overall. Recent data shows the average check for a foreign vacation has climbed 13 percent, hitting 194,000 rubles. For those looking to stretch that budget while still getting a unique cultural fix, Azerbaijan’s mix of Caspian Sea coastlines, mountain villages, and a food scene that rivals its neighbors makes it a smart, increasingly popular pick.
