Where to Stay Near White Sands National Park: From Glamping Domes to Boutique Hotels

White Sands National Park in New Mexico sits atop what was once the bottom of an ancient sea 250 million years ago. Unlike typical beach sand, these dunes reflect light instead of absorbing it, keeping the surface cool underfoot and giving it a sparkling appearance. Shrubs, yuccas, and grasses dot the Northern Chihuahuan Desert scene, serving as natural landmarks for visitors wandering the dunes with sand sleds.

Because the park is remote, lodging options are limited, with most stays requiring at least a 45-minute drive. Travelers can choose from a variety of accommodations scattered across the region, including Southwestern-style hotel suites, luxury glamping domes, and spacious villas suitable for groups.

Among the rental options, a colorful Las Cruces home sleeps nine, features a newly renovated kitchen, and offers complimentary dune sleds, board games, and a sunset-view patio. The town averages 294 sunny days per year. A dome-shaped home in Chaparral, about 75 minutes away, offers a spiral staircase, skylights, and desert views, with occasional glimpses of tracer missiles from the nearby White Sands Missile Range.

For a more immersive desert experience, a geodesic dome on El Mistico Ranch in Nogal sits on 30 acres of high desert land, 90 minutes from the park. The property includes hand-shaped chairs, a record player, and a mushroom sculpture forest that shines under the stars. A renovated stucco casita in El Paso, Texas, features wood floors, a black-and-white tiled walk-in shower, and sleeps four across a king and queen bed.

Hotels range from a 203-room property in downtown Las Cruces, 50 minutes away, featuring a Virgin Galactic-inspired Deluxe Terrace Room with direct patio access and a White Sands Package that includes two sand sleds, bottled water, and sunscreen. The historic Hotel Paso del Norte in El Paso, 90 minutes from the park, offers 351 rooms, a rooftop pool, a spa, and a bar beneath a 25-foot Tiffany-style stained glass dome.

The boutique Stanton House in El Paso provides 42 individually curated suites with art from national and international sources, plus a spa with steam rooms and sensory deprivation tanks. Another El Paso landmark, the 95-year-old historic hotel once home to Elizabeth Taylor, features Pueblo Revival Art Deco style, in-room Tivoli sound systems, and a rooftop bar called La Perla, inspired by Taylor's famous pearl. Its restaurant houses more than 800 bottles of agave spirits, the largest collection in Texas.

For a wellness-focused stay, the Sierra Grande in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, offers 17 rooms with private indoor and outdoor geothermal hot springs. Built in 1929 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is one of four Ted Turner Retreats in the state and opened in 2013 as a conservation-forward reserve.
