Where Everyday Costs Run Highest: A Global Look at Pricey Destinations

Moving abroad involves weighing visas, language, and community, but the bottom line often comes down to cost. In some places, daily expenses like rent, groceries, and utilities pile up quickly, making it harder to settle in before bills start climbing. To rank the steepest price tags, data company Numbeo’s Cost of Living Index compares expenses across thousands of locations, using New York City as a baseline score of 100. A destination scoring 120 means prices run 20% higher than in NYC. According to Numbeo’s 2026 mid-year report, the list of the eight most expensive countries and autonomous territories includes places as varied as the Solomon Islands and Turkmenistan. The ranking is based on everyday costs such as rent, food, and dining out, and the report is updated throughout the year. This version reflects new information added since the original publication.
