When Wild Neighbors Come Knocking: A Russian Family's African Adventure

For Yulia, a Russian woman who relocated to Uganda with her family in 2018, the phrase 'wild neighbors' takes on a whole new meaning. In an interview, she shared stories of the incredible - and sometimes frightening - wildlife encounters they experienced in their African home. The family's village was nestled deep in the wilderness, where leopards and antelopes roamed free. But it was the mischievous monkeys that proved to be the most persistent pests, constantly trying to break into their house. However, the real challenge came from the venomous snakes that slithered onto their property and even into their home, as well as the giant white ants with wings that seemed to appear out of nowhere. One morning, Yulia and her family woke up to find their yard overrun with millions of these ants, which had been attracted by the light the night before. In a bizarre twist, they ended up collecting the ants in bags and giving them to their neighbors, who apparently consider them a tasty snack - fried ants are said to be a delicacy, rich in protein and flavor, although Yulia's family never dared to try them. It's a far cry from the usual neighborhood disputes, and a testament to the unpredictable nature of life in the African wilderness.
