Weekend Getaways Dominate Russia's Summer Travel Scene

Short weekend trips have emerged as the defining travel trend for Russia's summer 2026 season, according to a new study by the booking platform Ostrovok. The data, shared with Lenta.ru, shows that demand for Friday-to-Sunday or Saturday-to-Sunday escapes in June and July rose by 5 percent compared to last year.
Russians are increasingly flocking to major tourist hubs for these quick breaks, with top destinations including Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar, Kazan, Sergiyev Posad, Suzdal, Yaroslavl, and Vladimir. The findings suggest a shift in how people approach summer travel, blending short bursts of exploration with longer vacations. "Summer is traditionally the season for extended holidays, but this year, weekend trips are steadily gaining a bigger share of travel plans," said Irina Kozlova, managing director of Ostrovok. "Russians are using this format to break up work routines and pack more experiences into the three summer months."
The trend points to a desire for variety and efficiency, allowing travelers to visit multiple destinations without committing to lengthy time off. In related news, a separate report highlighted that Russian Gen Z travelers have developed a taste for what some call "pensioner-style" stays at sanatoriums, with bookings among this age group jumping 15.5 percent. As summer approaches, the message is clear: quick getaways are the new normal for many.
