Water Crisis Grounds Gatwick's Toilets, Restaurants—and Passenger Patience

A water supply failure has left Gatwick Airport’s toilets out of order and forced the closure of restaurants and lounges in both terminals, causing widespread frustration among travelers. Bottled water is being distributed to passengers and staff, but some say they haven’t seen any. SES Water, the utility provider for the area, said the problem stems from a power outage at its Bough Beech Water Treatment Works, which is causing low pressure or no water for parts of Kent, Surrey, south London, and the airport. Crews are working to restore service.
Passengers like Paul Lee, who was waiting for a flight, told the BBC he heard no announcements about the issue and couldn’t find any bottled water. “For people who need to go to the toilet, this isn’t good,” Lee said. “I’m taking off soon, but for passengers in a few hours, this will be bad.” Shops remain open, but many departure area restaurants and bars are locked. Michael Dugher, former MP and newly appointed UK government music champion, posted on social media: “No water is one thing but depriving people of somewhere to sit is another. Families are having to sit on the floor.” He urged the airport to let people use chairs in closed eateries.
Easyjet responded by temporarily opening bag drop desks only two hours before departure instead of three, telling passengers not to arrive early. Gatwick says contingency measures are in place, and SES Water is working to fix the issue as quickly as possible. Travelers are advised to check with their airline before heading to the airport.
