Venice Weighs Raising Day-Trip Entry Fee to €30

Venice officials are considering raising the entry fee for day visitors to the historic centre to €30, as the city struggles with tourist numbers.
Michele Zuín, a municipal councillor responsible for budget and taxation, told the Gazzettino newspaper that the request to the government for a higher fee is not about filling city coffers. The current €5-10 charge, he said, is already affordable for most people and risks failing to act as the deterrent the measure is meant to be. He noted that figures as high as €50 had been discussed, but the sum may end up at €30.
The final amount would be set together with the government and parliament.
Municipal authorities will also look at increasing the number of days on which day-trippers must pay to enter the historic centre.
The city's new mayor, Simone Venturini, has previously proposed raising the existing €5-10 fee to €30-50 on certain days when tourist flows are expected to be especially heavy.
Guests staying in Venice hotels, people under 14, residents of the city and the Veneto region, and several exempt categories - including law enforcement officers, people with disabilities, students, local employees and those with relatives in Venice - would not have to pay.
