Venezuela Reels from Devastating Earthquakes as Buildings Collapse in Caracas

A pair of powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The capital city of Caracas was particularly hard hit, with buildings collapsing and residents evacuating into the streets. The US Geological Survey reported that the first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, with its epicentre located west of the community of Morón, while a second, even larger earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck just minutes later. The interior minister, Diosdado Cabello, warned of 'alarming situations' in the Altamira neighbourhood, where homes and buildings had collapsed. Residents described the terrifying experience of being tossed around by the force of the quake, with one resident, Roberto Damas, saying 'the building really shook from side to side. Unreal. The force was incredibly strong.' As people struggled to come to terms with the disaster, the mayor of the Chacao district confirmed that there had been fatalities, although the exact number is not yet known. The full extent of the damage is still emerging, but it is clear that the earthquakes have had a devastating impact on Venezuela, with many buildings reduced to rubble and widespread destruction reported. The international airport in La Guaira, a port city just north of Caracas, was also badly damaged, with footage showing travellers scattering for cover as the roof of the terminal building began to collapse. As the people of Venezuela begin the long process of recovery and rebuilding, officials are urging everyone to remain vigilant, with aftershocks possible in the coming hours and days. The USGS has warned that 'high casualties and extensive damage are probable' and that the disaster is 'likely widespread'. For now, the people of Venezuela can only pick up the pieces and try to come to terms with the scale of the disaster that has befallen them.
