Valverde Lisboa: The Lisbon Hotel I’ve Booked 10 Times and Counting

Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden has become my Lisbon home base—so much so that I’ve lost count of my stays. I first booked it in November 2014, shortly after it opened in September of that year. I’d spotted the hotel on social media, drawn to photos of stylish European influencers around its small pool and courtyard garden. It looked stylish but cozy, and unlike much of what Lisbon offered at the time.

Located on Avenida da Liberdade, the original townhouse had around two dozen rooms with layered interiors: velvet upholstery, midcentury furniture, geometric carpets, and quirky touches like porcelain birds on antique tables. The front salon, with striped walls, warm wood paneling, vintage chairs, and marble-top tables, was an early favorite. The dim, intimate lighting also added to the mood. Over time, I came to love the friendly service, the calm, and the sweet interior courtyard where long lazy breakfasts felt natural.

In 2021, the owner expanded the hotel with an adjacent property, doubling its size. The courtyard now links two buildings housing 48 guest rooms, a small gym, and two restaurants. The intimacy has shifted slightly, but the atmosphere remains casual and helpful. Some new rooms even have small balconies. The original basement breakfast space is still there, and a glitzy Mediterranean restaurant, Bougain Restaurant & Garden Bar, has become a local power-lunch spot.

The location is central but quieter than most: designer boutiques like Loewe and Prada are about five minutes away, trendy JNcQUOI Avenida is one minute away, and Red Frog bar sits across the street. Around dinner time, calm settles over the tree-lined avenue.

I keep returning for the comfort, ease, and beautiful interiors—and especially the service. My most recent stay was in late April 2025, during the Iberian blackout, when the whole country had no power and no Wi-Fi. The team stayed calm, handed out battery-powered flashlights, answered questions, and organized a moderately priced buffet for dinner. I spent the afternoon napping, working out, and lounging by the pool. I’ve been to Portugal more than three dozen times, and I’ll definitely be back.
