United Airlines Lets Early Birds Drop Bags the Night Before—Here’s How It Works

Few things test a traveler’s patience like a long check-in line at dawn. United Airlines is testing a fix: let passengers drop off their checked bags the evening before an early morning flight. The trial, called “Twilight Bag Drop,” launched last weekend at Chicago O’Hare and Guam International. The airline is also hinting at a future perk—free at-home bag pickup.

Here’s how it works: if your flight departs between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. from O’Hare’s Terminal 1, you can swing by the curbside check-in between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. the night before and hand over your luggage. United says it processed more than 1,600 bags this way over the Fourth of July weekend. The move also spreads morning staff workload to a quieter time of day—a win for both passengers and the airline.

The obvious catch: you have to get to the airport the night before, which is easy if you’re staying at a nearby hotel but less appealing if you live an hour away. United seems to have an answer. The airline’s website has been teasing a free at-home bag pickup service, currently limited to the Chicago area for O’Hare departures. If the Twilight Bag Drop catches on, United says it could expand to other hubs. It’s a bold step, though not as radical as Japan Airlines’ 2023 trial, which let foreign travelers rent clothes for their trip instead of packing them.
