Typhoon Maysak Hits Hainan: 20,000 Russian Tourists Urged to Stay Safe

Around 20,000 Russian tourists currently vacationing on China’s Hainan Island are being told to avoid swimming in the sea as Typhoon Maysak barrels toward the region. The Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) issued the warning Friday, advising travelers to follow local safety instructions, steer clear of commercial transport, and stay close to their hotels until the storm passes.

China’s meteorological service has flagged Maysak as the first typhoon of the year to make landfall, expected to hit Hainan’s eastern coast Wednesday before sweeping into Guangdong province. Heavy rains are forecast across southern China. In response, Aeroflot has already delayed six flights to and from Hainan, and local authorities have suspended all transportation on the island. Ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait were halted at 2 a.m. Friday, with the shutdown likely lasting one to two days depending on weather conditions.

ATOR stressed that flight delays and cancellations are likely, and passengers with connecting flights through mainland China should contact their airline or tour operator to rebook missed segments. Travelers are being notified of new departure times via the contact details provided at booking. The association urged everyone to keep an eye on official updates and stay put until the all-clear is given.
