Tropical Infection Alert: Russians Warned of Melioidosis Risk in Asian Countries

As the summer travel season heats up, Russian tourists heading to popular destinations in Asia are being warned about a potentially deadly tropical infection. Melioidosis, a bacterial disease found in soil and water, is prevalent in countries such as Vietnam, China, Indonesia, India, and Thailand, according to Russia's consumer protection agency, Rospotrebnadzor. The risk of infection is also high in Singapore, Australia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and other favorite haunts of tourists. In recent years, several cases of melioidosis have been reported in Russia, all of which were contracted in Thailand. To minimize the risk of infection, travelers are advised to avoid contact with soil, wear closed-toe shoes, and use beach mats or loungers when relaxing on the beach. Swimming in freshwater lakes, rivers, or ponds, especially those with stagnant water, is also strongly discouraged. The warning comes after a Russian tourist returned from Thailand and was hospitalized with melioidosis, also known as Whitmore's disease. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine available to protect against this disease, making prevention all the more important. By taking simple precautions, travelers can reduce their risk of infection and enjoy a safe and healthy trip abroad.
