Traveler's Ledger: Seven Destinations That Outshine Sochi on Cost and Comfort

After visiting 17 countries in two years, Russian traveler Elena has pinpointed seven she considers both cheaper and more comfortable than a domestic holiday in Sochi. She detailed her findings in her personal travel blog, 'Like Travel,' on the Yandex.Zen platform.
Topping her list is China, specifically the island of Hainan and the city of Sanya. Elena described being won over immediately by the modern hotels, pristine beaches, well-kept grounds, and notably attentive service. She highlighted the comfortable climate and an environment that feels safe and straightforward, even for older travelers.
Thailand also earned a spot for its ease in crafting a perfect vacation: mornings by the sea, afternoon island tours, and evenings filled with massages, markets, and excellent food. The infrastructure is strong, Elena noted, with a vast array of hotels to fit nearly any budget.
Vietnam, long seen as a value leader in Asia, was praised for its beautiful beaches with soft sand, clear water, and stunning sunsets. 'Prices for hotels and food stay reasonable,' she wrote. 'Sometimes, a good hotel here costs less than a basic option at a Russian resort.'
Her list extended to landlocked destinations, too. Uzbekistan made the cut for its atmosphere, culture, and cuisine. Egypt was included as a persistently affordable option for a seaside break, while Turkey was recognized for its consistently high service standards. Finally, Kyrgyzstan offered a summer alternative for swimming and sunbathing at prices she found lower than familiar resorts.
The analysis echoes broader sentiment. Recently, tourism expert and agency founder Maya Kotlyar contrasted Sochi and Turkish prices, stating the Russian trip was so much more expensive it 'made her feel sick,' noting Bodrum's luxury all-inclusive hotels often come at a better value.
