Travel Blogger Warns of Common Scams Targeting Tourists in Thailand

An Irish travel blogger with Russian-Armenian roots, known as Tim, has outlined several common scams in Thailand based on his personal experiences. Writing in his blog 'In Pursuit of the Unusual' on the Dzen platform, he described how tourists—particularly men from Russia—often find themselves targeted by local schemes. He noted that while Thailand is often called the 'Land of Smiles,' many of those smiles come with a price tag.

Tim detailed three main scams. The first, which he called 'the sick buffalo and other relatives,' involves a woman who enters a relationship with a tourist and later requests money for fabricated emergencies, such as a sick family buffalo or a brother in jail. After receiving large sums, she disappears. The second scam centers on quad bike rentals: after a tourist returns the vehicle, the owner points out a minor scratch and demands thousands of dollars for repairs, threatening police involvement if the tourist refuses to pay. The third occurs in bars, where women ask tourists to buy them drinks. At the end of the night, the bill lists each 'lady drink' at the price of a bottle of whiskey, with an implausible number of empty glasses.

Tim also warned about tuk-tuk drivers who offer city tours for 20 baht (about 46 rubles) but instead take passengers to shops selling suits or jewelry, claiming a 'one-day-only' sale on confiscated goods. While these accounts reflect Tim's personal observations, readers should note that his perspective is one among many. He previously commented that Russian tourists often overpay because they are reluctant to haggle in markets, accepting whatever price a seller asks.
