Travel Blogger's Warning: The Hotel Buffet Dishes Experts Say to Skip

Navigating a sprawling hotel breakfast buffet is a morning ritual for millions of travelers. But according to Russian travel blogger Elena Liseykina, some of the most popular items pose hidden risks. In a detailed post on her 'Travels with a Camera' blog, she highlighted dishes that are best avoided to prevent a vacation-ruining illness.
Liseykina places plain cooked rice at the top of her cautionary list. She explains that rice can harbor bacterial spores that survive cooking. 'When rice sits warming for hours, especially toward the end of breakfast service, those spores can activate and bacteria can multiply rapidly,' she wrote.
Pre-cooked egg dishes like scrambled eggs and omelets ranked second. Prepared in large batches and left to cool, they can become problematic if not thoroughly cooked from the start. She also advises steering clear of salads dressed with mayonnaise or sour cream, which often sit out at room temperature, and creamy sauces or gravies that cool into ideal breeding grounds for microbes.
Her expanded list of potentially risky buffet items includes cream-filled pastries, macaroni and cheese, bacon, and sausages. For travelers concerned about food safety, Liseykina suggests opting for individually packaged items like jams and yogurts, whole fruits, plain baked goods, and hard-boiled eggs. Her advice serves as a practical guide for guests seeking to enjoy their holiday meals with greater peace of mind.
