Travel Blogger Exposes the American Dream's Steep Price Tag

Russian travel blogger Alexander, documenting his U.S. trip on the Zen platform, reports a common disillusionment among new immigrants: the staggering, all-consuming cost of simply having a roof overhead. In a post for his blog '#делайчехочешь' (Do What You Want), he argues that housing expenses quickly shatter financial expectations.

Alexander describes a typical scenario where a significant portion of an immigrant's income vanishes into renting a single room, often in a state of disrepair. The rent, however, is just the starting point. He lists the additional burdens of insurance, homeowners' association fees, utilities, and taxes. These combined costs, he observes, trap individuals in a relentless cycle.

"The result is a person working almost without rest, possessing neither the funds nor the time to enjoy life," Alexander writes. "Their entire existence is consumed by paying for essentials and servicing debts. In the U.S., life is an endless series of credit obligations."

In a related anecdote, the blogger recounted a conversation with a fellow Russian seeking to rent a room in New Jersey. The potential American landlord expressed a stereotype, claiming Russians "spread dirt everywhere." Alexander's work suggests that for many immigrants, the challenges extend beyond economics to include cultural preconceptions, all while navigating a financially draining system.
