Train to Nowhere: Russian Travelers Stranded as Powerful Quake Hits Southern Japan

A Russian tourist found himself trapped aboard a train along with other passengers when a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture late last month. The traveler, whose identity was not disclosed, was en route from Saga to Nagasaki when the train suddenly ground to a halt roughly 70 kilometers from Kumamoto City — the area hardest hit by the tremor. According to Russian media outlet Shot, authorities have not allowed anyone to disembark, leaving a mix of locals and foreign tourists waiting inside the stationary cars.

The quake, recorded on July 28, sent violent tremors through the region, catching many commuters off guard. The stalled train, stopped as a safety precaution, remains stuck while officials assess damage to tracks and surrounding infrastructure. Fellow Russians staying in Kumamoto told reporters they felt the shaking clearly in the city center. While no Russian nationals were injured, several Japanese residents reportedly suffered leg injuries, according to local emergency services.

The 7.1-magnitude event was strong enough to rattle buildings and trigger landslides in rural areas. Video footage of the quake captured the moment streets swayed and utility poles wobbled. For the stranded travelers, the ordeal continues — with no clear timeline for when the train will be cleared to move. The situation underscores how quickly a relaxing vacation can turn into a waiting game when nature intervenes.
