Tragic Toll Rises to 15 as UK Heatwave Claims Young Lives in Water Accidents

A 13-year-old girl has died and a young boy remains missing, pushing the number of water-related fatalities during the UK’s record-breaking heatwave to at least 15. The girl was pulled from the River Wharfe in Burnsall, near Skipton, North Yorkshire, on Sunday evening. Emergency services airlifted her to hospital, but she was pronounced dead, according to North Yorkshire Police.
Julian Smith, the local MP for Skipton and Ripon, expressed his sorrow on Monday, thanking rescue teams and residents who helped. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young girl who died in Burnsall. This is horrific and devastating news,” he said.
Meanwhile, South Yorkshire Police resumed searches on Monday for an 11-year-old boy who entered the River Don in Mexborough on Saturday evening and has not been seen since. Crews from the National Police Air Service, paramedics, and fire brigade responded to the scene.
The deaths come during a scorching spell that saw the UK hit its highest May temperature on record—35.1°C at Heathrow and Kew Gardens. The charity National Water Safety reports that 26 people died in water-related incidents last May, slightly fewer than in the same month of 2024. Summer months typically see a rise in such accidents, with 2025 recording 202 accidental deaths overall, down from a peak of 315 in 2021.
Statistics show men in their 60s are the most vulnerable group, and inland waters like rivers and reservoirs claim more lives than the sea. In separate tragedies, a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire died after getting into trouble off the Merseyside coast on bank holiday Monday, and a woman in her 60s died after attempting to rescue her dog from the sea at Thornton-Cleveleys. Her husband, also in his 60s, remains in critical condition.
Temperatures have now dropped sharply, with forecasters predicting rain, thunderstorms, and winds. Meteorologist Rebecca Mitchell noted the heatwave is “over,” with conditions feeling more like spring or autumn, and temperatures about 14°C lower in some areas.
