Tragedy in Buryatia: Snowslide Kills Climbers, Criminal Probe Launched

A criminal investigation has been opened in Buryatia after a deadly snowslide swept through a group of seven climbers near Peak Konstitutsii. The hikers, who had not registered their expedition, were crossing the 26th Party Congress Pass in the Munku-Sardyk mountain knot when a mass of snow and ice broke loose. Three members of the party suffered injuries but managed to radio for help. The remaining four are believed to be buried under the snow; their location remains unknown. Russian authorities have charged the case under Article 238 of the Criminal Code, which covers the provision of services that fail to meet safety standards for life and health. The Investigative Committee stated that the probe aims to determine exactly how and why the accident occurred. The injured climbers are receiving medical attention, and rescue teams are working to reach the missing. This incident underscores the risks of unregistered trekking in remote, avalanche-prone terrain, especially in spring when snow conditions are unstable. Officials urge all outdoor enthusiasts to register their trips and check local warnings before heading into the mountains.
