Al JazeeraSaturday, July 11, 2026

A sightseeing trip turned to tragedy off the coast of Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, when a speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized in choppy waters. Local authorities confirmed that 15 people lost their lives in the accident, while 21 others were pulled from the sea by rescue teams. The boat, which was on a short excursion near the popular resort island, went down in the afternoon.

Emergency responders arrived quickly on the scene and managed to save more than half of the passengers. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials say the group was part of a larger tour party visiting Vietnam’s southern waters. The exact circumstances of the sinking remain unclear, and an investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.

Phu Quoc, known for its white sand beaches and clear waters, has seen a surge in Indian tourism in recent years. This incident marks one of the deadliest maritime accidents involving foreign visitors in the region. Vietnam’s transport ministry has pledged a full inquiry, and Indian diplomatic staff are in contact with local officials to assist the families of the victims. The tragedy has cast a somber shadow over what is typically a vibrant holiday destination.
