Tourist's Friendly Chat Ends in Theft on Thai Beach

A young tourist's evening in Pattaya, Thailand, turned into a costly lesson after a seemingly friendly encounter. According to a report by local outlet The Thaiger, a 21-year-old Chinese woman and her boyfriend filed a police report early on April 9th.
The woman told officers that two foreign men approached them in the Bang Lamung district and struck up a conversation. After some talk, the pair made an unusual request: they asked to see examples of Chinese currency. The tourist handed over her wallet. The men examined the bills with apparent interest before returning it and hastily leaving.
Only later did the woman discover the ruse. Her wallet was missing 1,000 Chinese yuan, 5,000 Thai baht, and a 2.5-gram gold ring. Police have registered the complaint and say they are working to identify the suspects.
This was not an isolated incident that night. Around 11:00 p.m., just hours earlier, two Indian tourists reported falling victim to an identical scheme. The method echoes another recent case in the country, where an Iranian couple was accused of stealing $1,600 from an Indian tourist after asking to see foreign banknotes in a shopping mall.
The incidents serve as a stark reminder for travelers: be wary of strangers making personal financial requests, no matter how casual the introduction seems.
