Tourist's Beachside Kebab Rings Up a Staggering £1,500 in Rio Scam

A British tourist expecting a simple beach snack on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana received a severe case of sticker shock. On April 14th, authorities detained a vendor for charging the visitor £1,500 for a kebab—a markup of roughly one thousand times its actual £1.50 value.

The scam, reported by The Guardian, involved a rigged card terminal. An accomplice allegedly programmed the device to deduct vastly inflated amounts while the vendor targeted unsuspecting foreigners. The tourist's payment of 1,500 pounds instead of 1.5 highlighted the brazen scheme.

This incident is not isolated. It marks the latest in a string of high-profile overcharging cases targeting visitors along Rio's famed coastline. In recent months, two Argentinian tourists were presented with a £1,000 bill for two açai berry smoothies. A Colombian traveler was charged £400 for a single alcoholic cocktail.

The problem of exorbitant beachfront pricing extends beyond Brazil. British tourists on the Greek island of Mykonos were recently billed £324 for a modest lunch of beer, a mojito, two milkshakes, a Greek salad, bread, and a plate of squid. These incidents serve as a stark reminder for travelers to verify prices and payment amounts carefully before tapping their cards.
