Touchless ID Program Takes Off, Adding 50 Airports Nationwide

The Transportation Security Administration is significantly broadening its touchless identification program, bringing the technology to an additional 50 U.S. airports. This move marks a major step in the agency's effort to streamline security and reduce physical contact at checkpoints.

The expansion targets a diverse mix of locations, from the country's busiest international hubs to smaller, regional airports. Travelers will simply approach a credential authentication technology scanner, place their ID inside, and look at a camera. The system verifies the ID's authenticity and matches it to the passenger's live image, all without a TSA officer needing to handle the physical document.

Proponents highlight the dual benefit of increased security through advanced fraud detection and a more efficient passenger experience. The technology is already operational in several major airports, where it has cut down on wait times and simplified the initial document check.

While participation remains optional for passengers, the TSA anticipates widespread adoption as the program grows. A full list of the new airports set to receive the equipment has been published by the agency. This expansion signals a clear shift toward integrating more digital and biometric tools into the everyday travel process, aiming to make airport security lines faster and less hands-on for millions of passengers each year.
