Tokyo’s 2026 Best Restaurants: 42 Picks From Standing Soba to Three-Star Dining

Tokyo has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city, but Condé Nast Traveler’s 2026 guide argues that the real story is range. The city gives the same serious attention to a bowl of standing soba as it does to a sushi counter booked months ahead. Recent openings prove the point: an Italian-trained chef in Kagurazaka ends his omakase with pizza; an eight-seat Ebisu counter grills yakitori over wood fire and charcoal; and in Ginza, Natsuko Shoji serves breakfast at Tiffany’s literally.

The 42 essential picks span ramen shops, neighborhood izakaya and dining rooms worth planning a trip around. Every restaurant was independently selected by Condé Nast Traveler editors and reviewed by a local contributor who visited. Highlights include Kanda, which has held three Michelin stars since 2008, pairs Edo-era lacquerware with Krug; Sézanne, above Tokyo Station, where Daniel Calvert brings French technique to binchotan-grilled fish; and the Lima-inspired menu in Kioicho that organizes Peruvian ecosystems with Japanese ingredients.

The list also takes in a standing sushi bar in Azabu-juban with red-vinegar rice, a Michelin-starred ramen counter in Higashi-Ginza, Tonki’s old-school tonkatsu served since 1939, and a Shirokane yakitori shop under a highway overpass where a chart lists 30 to 40 cuts of chicken. Add tempura, soba, wagyu and sake bars, and the message is clear: in Tokyo, excellence is simply the standard.
