Tokyo Tourism: When Hype Meets Reality

A Russian travel blogger recently shared her unvarnished thoughts on Tokyo's most popular attractions, and her verdict may surprise you. Writing on her personal blog, 'The Demanding Tourist', she revealed that some of the city's most famous spots left her underwhelmed. The bustling Shibuya Crossing, known for its neon lights and giant video screens, was a major letdown. Instead of the 'wow factor' she expected, she found herself surrounded by people staring at their phones, rushing to cross the street even when the light was red, and obstructing traffic. 'If you have to travel an hour to get there and another hour back, it's just not worth it,' she concluded. 'Tokyo has so much more to offer than a crowded street crossing.' Another overhyped attraction, in her opinion, was the giant Godzilla head in the Kabuki-cho district. She advised against making a special trip to see it, saying it wasn't worth the effort. The blogger also panned the Shibuya Sky observation deck, suggesting that visitors could get a similar view from the Tokyo government's observation towers – for free, and without the hassle of buying tickets. Her candid assessment is a refreshing change from the usual glowing reviews of Tokyo's tourist hotspots, and a reminder that even the most famous destinations can be disappointing if they don't live up to their hype.
