Tokyo Shaken by Powerful Earthquake, Emergency Alert System Triggered

RIA NovostiSaturday, June 27, 2026

A strong earthquake struck Japan, causing significant tremors in Tokyo and prompting the activation of the city's emergency warning system. According to the Meteorological Agency, the quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and originated in Yamanashi Prefecture. Residents of Tokyo reported feeling intense shaking, likened to the motion of a ship at sea, which lasted for approximately half a minute. The emergency alert system was triggered on mobile phones, warning people of the impending quake just seconds before it hit. While the tremors were powerful, they did not appear to cause significant damage, with lighting fixtures swaying but furniture and objects remaining stable. However, the prolonged duration of the shaking caused discomfort and a sense of unease among those affected, with some comparing it to the sensation of seasickness. The quake served as a reminder of Japan's seismic activity and the importance of its early warning systems in helping to protect residents from potential harm.
