Timber Fire Forces Cancellation of Monterey Car Week Gathering

Monterey Car Week is facing disruption this year as emergency resources are being redirected to fight the growing Timber Fire. The strain has already led to the cancellation of at least one automotive event on the Monterey Peninsula, showing how quickly natural disasters can affect large-scale tourism.

The cancellation was confirmed during a Friday broadcast by KSBW Action News 8, with the anchor reporting that the Timber Fire caused a car week event to be called off. The affected gathering was the Valvetronic Designs Cars and Coffee event, scheduled to take place at Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove.

Valvetronic Designs, known for high-end exhaust systems, had planned the meetup for enthusiasts to connect and display their vehicles. According to the broadcast, organizers said the event was cancelled due to staffing constraints linked directly to the wildfire response.

The connection between a car show and a wildfire lies in municipal resources. Car events require permits mandating police for traffic control, fire marshals for safety inspections, and EMS crews on standby. With the Timber Fire diverting those first responders to protect lives and property, organizers cannot guarantee public safety. Poor air quality from smoke also makes outdoor gatherings risky for attendees and valuable classic cars.

While the event will not happen this weekend, organizers are reportedly hoping to secure the necessary permits and staffing to bring it back to Monterey Car Week next year.
