Three Tourists Perish on Siberian Peak as Rescue Team Confirms Fatal Descent

Rescue workers in Buryatia have reached the remote slope where three tourists from Krasnoyarsk died earlier this week. The team from the regional search and rescue service confirmed the deaths of one man and two women during their descent from Mount Munku-Sardyk.

The group began their trek on April 18 and was scheduled to return today, April 22. The tragedy unfolded late on April 21, when several surviving members of the party managed to reach a road. They left a note at a roadside cafe detailing the three fatalities before returning to the mountain site to await help. Preliminary information from investigators indicates the cause was severe hypothermia.

Standing at 3,492 meters, Munku-Sardyk is the highest peak in Eastern Siberia. Located in the Okinsky district on the Mongolian border, it is the third tallest mountain in Russia, surpassed only by Mount Elbrus and Mount Belukha. The rescue service is currently conducting a full examination of the area as the investigation continues.
