Three Passengers Dead, One in ICU After Suspected Virus Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise Ship

RIA NovostiMonday, May 4, 2026

A voyage aboard the polar cruise ship MV Hondius has turned tragic, with three passengers dead and a fourth fighting for his life in a South African hospital. The vessel, operated by Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions, was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde when the health crisis unfolded.

On May 2, a German passenger died aboard the ship, the company confirmed in a press release. That death came just days after two Dutch passengers had already lost their lives. The cause of the German passenger's death has not yet been determined.

Earlier, on April 27, a British passenger fell ill and was evacuated to South Africa. He is now in intensive care in Johannesburg, listed in critical but stable condition. Tests revealed he is infected with a variant of the hantavirus, a rare but sometimes deadly pathogen spread by rodents.

The situation on the MV Hondius remains serious. Two crew members—one British, one Dutch—are showing acute respiratory symptoms. One has a mild case, the other severe. Both require urgent medical attention. No other passengers or crew have reported symptoms so far.

South Africa's Ministry of Health confirmed Sunday that two people had already died from acute respiratory infections on the same ship, which was crossing the Atlantic. The MV Hondius is a polar expedition vessel designed for remote travel, but this outbreak has turned a dream journey into a nightmare for those aboard.
