Three New Italian Train Routes Set to Launch in Fall 2026

October is shaping up to be a prime time for visiting Italy, with mild weather, thinner crowds, and a rare overlap of harvest seasons for olives, wine grapes, and truffles. Starting in October 2026, three new rail journeys will offer travelers fresh ways to explore the country, whether they're drawn to history, design, or food.

The first is a five-day, four-night trip from Rome to Istanbul aboard Orient Express La Dolce Vita. The route passes through Venice, Budapest, and Romania, with stops at Transylvania's castles, including Peles and Bran. Guests can expect Michelin-recognized chef Heinz Beck's cuisine, live music, and elegant cabins. The first departure is October 22, 2026, with fares starting at $23,000.

Next, Belmond's Venice-Simplon Orient Express offers a Paris-to-Portofino journey from October 15-18, 2026. This itinerary includes a night on the train, then two nights at the Splendido hotel in Portofino. Onboard perks include Champagne, afternoon tea, multi-course dinners, and live music in the Art Deco bar. At the hotel, guests can enjoy a redesigned pool, tennis, or a hike to a lighthouse, ending with a private gala dinner. Fares start at about $23,500.

Finally, FS Treini Touristi's new "Truffle and Wine" route runs from Milan to Alba on Sundays from October 11 through December 6, 2026. The 3.5-hour ride features restored 1970s Gran Confort carriages with velvet seats and panoramic windows. Passengers can taste local products and learn about Alba's traditions. The trip aligns with the International Alba White Truffle Fair, where visitors can sample dishes and buy truffles from hunters. One-way fares are about $80.
