Three Climbers Perish on Siberia's Munku-Sardyk Peak

A commercial climbing expedition on Mount Munku-Sardyk in Buryatia has ended in tragedy. Three members of a 15-person group from Krasnoyarsk died from hypothermia during their descent, according to Russian emergency services.
The party, whose members ranged in age from 30 to 56, registered their planned ascent with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. They began their climb on April 18 and were scheduled to return by April 22. Ivan Alkheev, deputy chairman of the Buryat government, stated the climbers successfully reached the 3,492-meter summit on April 20 and took photographs.
Contact with the group was later lost. In the early hours of April 21, several surviving climbers reached a road and left a note at a roadside cafe reporting the three fatalities before returning to the scene. A search and rescue operation is underway.
Munku-Sardyk, situated on the Russian border with Mongolia, is the highest peak in Eastern Siberia. This incident underscores the severe and unpredictable conditions that can confront even registered and prepared groups in this remote region.
