The World Cup's Real Show Is Outside the Stadium

This summer, North America will welcome a wave of roughly 6.5 million international visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For the first time, the tournament is spread across three nations, with matches in 16 cities from Mexico City to Toronto. While tickets for the games themselves are scarce, a significant number of fans are booking trips just to be in the host cities.

Paul Caine, president of FIFA's official hospitality partner On Location, observes that the draw is the atmosphere itself. 'People just want to be where the energy is,' he says. 'Many of the cities are pulling out all the stops.'

The energy begins in Mexico City, where the opening match at Estadio Azteca is just the start. The city will connect the ancient roots of the game with modern celebration. Visitors can explore the ball courts at Teotihuacán, taste regional dishes from across Mexico at a weeks-long food festival, and join massive public viewings in the Zócalo square.

When the focus shifts to Los Angeles in June, the U.S. Men's National Team's first game coincides with a sprawling official Fan Festival at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Neighborhood Fan Zones will offer free entry and local flavor. For those seeking a premium experience, hospitality packages combine tickets with high-end hotel stays and exclusive travel benefits.

Yet the most memorable moments may be the spontaneous ones: impromptu street soccer, chanting with strangers in a packed bar, or feeling a neighborhood erupt in joy. In a diverse city like Toronto, Kelly Jackson of Destination Toronto notes that communities will rally behind different teams. 'You combine that with all the international visitors, and it's going to create a really special environment,' she says.

The 2026 World Cup promises a month-long cultural festival where the match is just one part of the spectacle.
