The Travel Writer's Flight-Tested Formula: What to Wear on a Long Haul

After a decade of crisscrossing time zones, I’ve settled on a travel uniform. It’s not about fashion trends; it’s a practical, repeatable system for comfort and ease from curb to baggage claim. The core pieces are simple: functional black pants, a plain white tee, a lightweight sweater, a bomber jacket, and reliable sneakers. This combination has carried me through 77,000 miles of work travel in the last year alone, including a 13-hour journey to Vietnam, without sacrificing comfort or looking like I’ve given up.

Supportive sneakers are non-negotiable. I alternate between pairs from Allbirds, Adidas Sambas, and Hokas, depending on the destination and need. The key is they must be shoes you can move quickly in and easily remove at security.

My black pants, currently a pair from AYR, are the neutral foundation. They resist wrinkles, hide stains, and are polished enough for a dinner right off the plane. For cooler flights, a soft, oversized cashmere sweater from Reformation is my go-to layer. It works in any season, countering aggressive airplane air conditioning.

The white tee underneath, often from Abercrombie or Vuori, is the ultimate versatile piece. It layers seamlessly under the sweater or the final element: a roomy, men’s-style bomber jacket from Lululemon. This jacket is windproof, packs small, and provides just enough warmth without bulk.

My system extends to luggage—an Away Bigger Carry-On and its matching tote are my constant companions—and to health. After a long flight left my leg swollen years ago, I never board without compression socks from brands like Comrad or Bombas. They’re a small addition that makes a significant difference after hours in the air. This is the refined, real-world kit that makes long-distance travel genuinely manageable.
