The Secret to a Stress-Free Family Road Trip

As the summer travel season is in full swing, many parents are facing a familiar challenge: how to keep their kids from getting restless and irritable on long car trips. According to crisis psychologist Varvara Likunova, this behavior is not a reflection of poor parenting, but rather a normal reaction to the physical and emotional demands of a long journey. Children between the ages of one and five or six are particularly prone to tantrums, as they tire easily, have limited patience, and are heavily influenced by their physical state. As Likunova explains, the main culprit behind these outbursts is often an overloaded nervous system, which can be triggered by a combination of factors including prolonged sitting, boredom, heat, hunger, and fatigue. To minimize the risk of a disastrous trip, Likunova recommends planning around your child's sleep schedule, making regular stops every 1.5 to 2 hours, and limiting screen time. She also advises against scolding or threatening your child, and instead suggests acknowledging their feelings and offering empathy. By staying calm and patient, parents can help reduce their child's stress levels and create a more enjoyable experience for the whole family. As Likunova notes, it's essential to remember that a child's tantrums are not a reflection of your parenting skills, but rather a natural response to the challenges of travel. By being understanding and proactive, you can turn a potentially stressful trip into a fun and memorable adventure.
