The Northern Belle: A British Time Machine on Rails

Forget the Orient Express for a moment. There's a British train that matches its glamour, mile for mile. The Northern Belle, a meticulously restored 1930s-style luxury train, is carving its own path through the hills of Wales, the dales of Northern England, and the glens of Scotland.

Departing from various UK stations, its upcoming itineraries include steam-hauled trips from Darlington, Liverpool, and Manchester to Carlisle. Each of its seven carriages, named for British castles and estates, is a rolling tribute to art deco elegance. The experience is defined by white-tablecloth dining, Champagne afternoon tea, and live music, all framed by ever-changing views through large windows.

Travelers can select day excursions to destinations like the Royal Yacht Britannia or Chatsworth House, or settle in for longer rides dedicated purely to the pastoral scenery. As seasons change, so do the themes; winter brings popular Christmas market trips to Edinburgh and York, complete with festive meals onboard.

The train's reputation has garnered serious attention. It featured on the television series 'World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys,' and trainspotting influencer Francis Bourgeois has documented his journey. Fares typically range from $490 to $800, offering a slice of vintage travel without leaving the British Isles. Schedules and bookings are available directly through the Northern Belle's website.
