The Next Total Solar Eclipse Lands in 2027 — Here’s What to Know

The eclipse buzz from this summer doesn’t stop with August 12. Enthusiasts are already eyeing the next total solar eclipse, described by some as a once-in-a-lifetime event and even the “eclipse of the century.” On August 2, 2027, the moon’s shadow will sweep across southern Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, offering up to about six minutes and 22 seconds of totality — among the longest such durations in modern times.
Solar astrophysicist Ryan French calls it “perhaps the most exciting of our lifetimes.” The last total eclipse exceeding six minutes was in 1991, and the next won’t come until 2114. For comparison, the 2026 total eclipse maxes out at 2 minutes and 18 seconds. The long totality gives viewers more time to soak in the corona, the drop in temperature, and the appearance of stars — a shift that science communicator Laura Tenenbaum calls “magical.”
The path of totality crosses southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. Southern Spain offers easy logistics, with parts of Cádiz and Málaga provinces, the Costa del Sol, Tarifa, and Gibraltar all in the path. Tenenbaum plans to base in Málaga, then ferry to Tangier for nearly five minutes of totality. Egypt is the marquee spot: Luxor gets close to the maximum duration, and travelers can pair the event with the temples, the Valley of the Kings, or a Nile cruise.
Independent travelers are advised to book flexible hotels, arrive days early, and stay inside the path — a 99% partial eclipse still misses the corona and sudden darkness. Tour operators and cruises are already filling up, with options from Geographic Expeditions (10 days, from $22,250) to Holland America (14 days, from $4,854) and Virgin Voyages (12 days, from $6,924).
Looking further out, a total solar eclipse on July 22, 2028 will cross Australia and southern New Zealand. Smithsonian Journeys has a 13-day land itinerary ending with a watch party at Taronga Zoo on Sydney Harbour, and hotels in Dunedin are already booked solid for that event.
