The Hotel Rewards Program for Travelers Who Skip the Chains

Forget the big-name hotel brands for a moment. There's a quieter player in the loyalty space that connects you to over 650 independent hotels, from a chic urban retreat in New York to a secluded resort in the Maldives. It's called I Prefer Hotel Rewards, and membership won't cost you a thing.

Operated by the Preferred Travel Group, I Prefer offers the standard rewards structure—earn points on stays for future discounts or free nights—but with a focus on distinctive, often luxurious, independent properties. Benefits like room upgrades and late checkout are standard. The program uses a three-tier system: Silver, Gold, and Titanium, with perks growing as you accumulate points.

Joining is simple: sign up online or at any participating hotel. To earn points, you must book directly through the hotel or I Prefer's websites, not third-party platforms. Points accrue at a rate of 10 per dollar spent at most hotels, with bonus earnings at higher tiers. They convert to Rewards Certificates to offset room charges, and possibly other hotel services, depending on the property.

A key detail: points expire after two years of account inactivity. Tier status is also re-evaluated annually, so you must re-qualify each year to maintain Gold or Titanium levels.

The real advantage might be for points collectors. I Prefer allows you to transfer points from partners like Capital One and Citi at favorable rates, potentially giving your existing miles new life. If you seek stays with more character than a chain hotel, signing up for this free program is an easy decision.
