The Highland Hideaway That Feels Like a Fairytale

Driving through the Scottish Highlands is an experience in itself. The road from Edinburgh to Oban unfurls like a scene from a fantasy novel—rugged, moody, and impossibly beautiful. But at the end of that route lies a destination that makes you want to press pause on life and stay awhile. Home Farm is that place. It’s not just a place to sleep; it’s a sanctuary that seems to exhale as you arrive. Deer wander the woodlands nearby, and by the time you pull up to the stone house, the tension of city life has already started to melt away. The building dates back to the 1600s, but what really gives it character is the story behind it. Owners Paul and Antonia spent months restoring every corner, blending centuries-old charm with modern comfort. Paul’s connection to the property goes back to childhood, when he’d stop by after school to visit the horses kept there in winter. Years later, working in Glasgow, he saw it was for sale and felt pulled back. Inside, the house is a thoughtful mix of old and new: restored wooden floors with handwoven rugs, open fireplaces, standalone baths, and a kitchen that feels both authentic and inviting. There’s a cozy nook with a record player and a wall of vinyl, plus original artwork that includes a film poster and a painting of the original owner. You might never want to leave, but the location is a bonus. Set on six acres, Home Farm is just a 10-minute drive from Oban’s charming waterfront. We spent an April afternoon by the beach, wandered the streets, then took a boat to nearby islands—spotting seals and warming up with fish and chips. Back at the house, mornings were spent in pajamas and boots, crunching through leaves to spot red squirrels. Evenings meant lounging by the fire with a movie on the projector screen. The utter darkness and silence—no light pollution here—delivered the best sleep we’d had in months. Home Farm has soul. Its closest neighbors, a pair of barn owls nesting on the roof, seem to agree. You can watch them on the property’s “owl-cam.” They look perfectly content. And really, who wouldn’t be?
