More travelers are crafting their own adventures, but the further you go and the more complex the itinerary, the greater the chance of a costly misstep, says Irina Manuilskaya, sales director for the Sodis travel agency. She outlined the most frequent pitfalls for independent planners.

Visa and entry formalities top the list. Travelers often make errors on applications, misstating travel dates or failing to meet passport validity rules. Even for visa-free destinations, many countries now require pre-departure digital forms or QR codes. These rules change frequently, and discovering a new requirement at the airport is a common shock.

Another misstep is relying solely on online hotel ratings. "Reviews are subjective," Manuilskaya notes. "A hotel popular with nightlife seekers might be a poor fit for a family."

Long-haul flights bring their own issues, particularly confusion over check-in dates that can lead to paying for an extra night or losing one entirely. Remember, with typical check-in at 3:00 PM and checkout by noon, a 6:00 AM arrival means a long wait for your room.

Over-ambitious routing is a classic error. A multi-city journey looks straightforward on a map, but transit times and connections often consume more of the trip than anticipated, forcing travelers to skip planned stops.

Financial surprises also await. Hotels often place a hold on your card for incidentals, sometimes converting the deposit into local currency. Upon checkout, the refund goes through a second conversion, leaving you with less than you started with.

The core lesson? The DIY approach demands meticulous, up-to-date research. As veteran travel blogger Rita noted, trying to see everything at once is often the first mistake.
