The $80 Lifetime Pass That Unlocks America’s Best Outdoor Adventures for Seniors

For anyone 62 or older with a love of the outdoors, there’s a travel bargain that’s hard to beat: a lifetime pass to more than 1,000 federal recreation sites across the United States, including every national park, for just $80. U.S. citizens and permanent residents qualify for the America the Beautiful Senior Pass, which covers entry fees at sites managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, and several other agencies.
While the pass grants free entry to all 63 national parks—where vehicle fees often run $30 or more—its real value goes further. It also covers standard amenity fees at national forests, monuments, and recreation areas, and offers a 50% discount on many campgrounds, boat launches, and swimming areas. That means a trip to Yosemite or Arches can become significantly more affordable, especially for retirees traveling by RV.
Nina Gralak, a retired Nevada resident, uses her pass regularly. “It quickly pays for itself,” she says. “We also get discounts at Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds. On a recent trip to Big Bend, we were surprised to find Fort Davis accepted it too.”
There are a few limitations. The discount doesn’t apply at private concessionaire-run campgrounds, like those in Yosemite managed by Aramark. It also doesn’t cover state park entry fees or special backcountry permits. But for the price of a good dinner out, the senior pass opens up thousands of destinations.
You can buy the pass in person at any federal recreation site—just bring a driver’s license or passport—or order a digital version online at Recreation.gov. Purchasing at a non-park site keeps the funds local for visitor projects; buying at a national park entrance supports the National Park Foundation. Either way, it’s a small investment that pays off in big adventures.
