The 24-Hour Flight That Makes Australia to London Nonstop a Reality

For years, the idea of flying directly from Australia to Europe or the Americas has been a traveler's fantasy. That fantasy just took a giant step toward reality. Airbus and Qantas have completed a record-breaking test flight that proves ultra-long-haul travel is more than possible—it's here.

The test saw an Airbus A350-1000ULR take off from Melbourne and land in Toulouse, France, 24 hours and 24 minutes later. The plane charted a path across the Pacific Ocean, over the United States and Canada, before descending into Europe. It covered 12,460 nautical miles, officially making it the longest test flight ever for a commercial passenger aircraft, surpassing a 2005 record set by a Boeing 777-200LR.

To pull off a 24-hour journey without refueling, Airbus engineers made significant modifications. The plane carries an extra 20,000-liter fuel tank built into the rear center, bringing total fuel capacity to about 189,000 liters. To offset that weight, the cabin will be far less dense than a standard A350. When Qantas finally puts these jets into service, they'll hold just 238 seats, with a spacious layout that includes a dedicated wellness zone for passengers.

Qantas expects to launch its first nonstop routes by 2027. Passengers boarding in Sydney or Melbourne will be able to wake up in London or New York without ever setting foot in another terminal. The long-haul layover, it seems, is finally on its way out.
