Thailand Cuts Visa-Free Stays to 30 Days to Curb Misuse

Thailand is tightening its visa-free entry rules, slashing the allowed stay for foreign visitors from 60 days down to 30. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow announced the change on May 12, explaining it's aimed at stopping people from exploiting the relaxed entry system for reasons other than tourism. "We're reducing the visa-free period to minimize abuse by foreigners using loopholes for non-tourist purposes," he told Thai PBS. The move is part of a broader effort to get a better grip on migration flows while still keeping Thailand welcoming to travelers. Officials believe the shorter window will discourage those who've been using the longer stay to work illegally or engage in other activities outside the scope of a holiday. The kingdom has long been a top destination for global tourists, known for its beaches, temples, and vibrant street life. By trimming the visa-free window back to a month—the standard in many other Southeast Asian nations—authorities hope to strike a balance between open doors and orderly borders. The change is expected to take effect soon, though exact dates haven't been confirmed. For now, tourists planning longer trips may need to look into visa extensions or alternative permits. The adjustment doesn't affect visa-on-arrival or other long-stay options, which remain available for those who qualify.
